Target: Bringing Good Design to the Masses
March 19th, 2005 | Published in Business, Design

After seeing a creative ad on Salon the other day I decided to walk into a Target store for the time in more then a decade. I was impressed beyond belief. The store itself was open and clean. Stuff was easy to locate. But more then anything the items in the Michael Graves Collection were both stunning, functional, and affordable.
It got me thinking. Is Target doing more than any other store to bring design awareness to the masses? In my opinion the majority of the public craves products that are elegant, yet functional. But in too many instances the price point is such that they opt for only functional.
For more on this issue see a wonderful book called The Design of Everyday Things. Since reading this book it has changed the way I look at common products and I now ask myself all the time, "why wasn’t this designed better?"
