“Weeds” Promo Insert

September 17th, 2006  |  Published in Branding, Culture

I’m a huge fan of HBO orginal shows. For the last several years Sunday night with HBO has been a wonderful and rewarding TV viewing experience. Therefore, I never really even gave any Showtime series a chance.

That changed when I got hooked on Sleeper Cell. From there I started watching season one of Weeds via Ondemand. I was hooked within the first couple minutes and amazed I hadn’t heard more about the show or seen any ads promoting it.

Well with season two starting tonight Showtime has steeping up their promotional efforts. In the August 24th issue of Rolling Stone they included an insert with a "scratch-and-sniff" strip that smells like, well, weed.

I like the idea, but then I’m a liberal. I expected there would be some backlash in the media. But a quick search on Google News shows there is almost no coverage, which I bet depresses Showtime somewhat. I expect Showtime thought the campaign might get the series a ton of "free" coverage with people like Bill O’Reilly taking about how a scented piece of paper would have kids pulling tubes in a matter of minutes. But alas it didn’t happen.

Weeds is on Showtime tonight (9/17) at 9:00 PM EST. If you’ve not given this show a chance, you should. Enjoy.
