Is The “Post-Advertising” World A Reality?
August 16th, 2008 | Published in Advertising, Culture
I am so sick of reading article after article that declares with authority that “advertising is dead.”
Industry pubs and business journals declare that the Internet, digital video recorders (DVRs), social networking sites, YouTube, and viewer submitted news sites like Digg have moved us into a “post-advertising” age.
Has the Internet and user controlled technology changed the advertising landscape, you bet. It now means every square inch of the freaking planet is now covered in advertising. Just look around. There is advertising on your eggs, in your dry cleaning bag, urinals, bus stops, gas pumps, supermarket floors, crosswalks, video games, even within the channel guide on your TiVo.
Advertising has become more pervasive not less, yet these talking heads and so-called experts can’t even see the forest for the trees.
