Agent Zero’s New Shoes

As I’ve mentioned in the past Gilbert Arenas (aka Agent Zero) is one of my favorite sports figures. I mean he even writes his own blog that isn’t filtered by some PR flak. Well I guess when my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said Agent Zeros TS Lightswitch Gil EA shoes they thought I was joking. I mean what could a 38 year old short white guy want with these darn things. I guess I’ll have to order a pair myself if I want to tool around town in them.

Agent Zero: Gilbert Arenas

To say I am a huge sports fan would be an understatement. But for the life of me I was never able to get into the NBA. I thought this was cause I didn’t have a “favorite” team, much less one in my hometown. Then in the 90s I lived for more then a decade in DC and still couldn’t get into the pros. Well this has changed the last year or so since I started to follow Gilbert Arenas (Mr. Agent Zero) of the Washington Wizards.

Not only is the man a joy to watch, but he is a very unique guy. But not in the bad way. He is just unique. Just a few stories from recent years:

  • During the 2003-04 season, Arenas tried to vote himself into the All Star game, trading a pair of shoes and a jersey for a box of ballots. He says he took him a month working non-stop to fill out 50,000.
  • In October 2006 he converted his Washington, D.C. home to simulate high-altitude conditions, stating that he hoped the arrangement would help him have more energy, especially late in games.
  • At the Wizards’ first home game of the 2006-2007 season, during the introductions, Arenas came out wearing a blue robe with a hood, looking like a boxer. He was supposed to resemble a “wizard.”
  • He plays video poker on his laptop during halftime.
  • During the 2006 NBA season, he began to shout the word hibachi as he took field goal attempts in games, explaining, “You know, a hibachi grill gets real hot. That’s what my shot’s like, so I’ve been calling it that: ‘Welcome to the hibachi’.”
  • On road trips, he will often forgoes team outings on the town in favor of sitting in his room, ordering products from infomercials, such as a colon cleanser.
  • During the halftime of a game where he was playing bad he took a shower with his uniform on, didn’t change it, and went out and played the second half.
  • During the 2007 All Star game in Vegas, Gilbert joined a line of dunking Elvis impersonators and completed a between-the legs dunk off a trampoline.

Agent Zero is a neat guy IMHO, but I’ve been accused of being a little “off-beat” myself. I’d love to have a cup of coffee with him and chat with him what does through he head.

We Want Ohio State/Flordia

Well my LSU Tiger’s (#4) thoroughly demolish Notre Dame (#11) 41-14 in the Sugar Bowl tonight. And it wasn’t even that close. One bounce of the ball here and one overturned play here reversed and it could have been 55-0.

Don’t get me wrong, I was am very happy LSU got a chance to play in New Orleans. It did a lot for the city, the state, and area. I mean it was a home game (although not really fair to ND) for LSU. And I get that ND is a school with a huge following, so I understand why the BCS put together this match-up (money and TV ratings).

But give me a break. LSU should have played Michigan or USC. Period, end of statement. Now we want the winner of Ohio State/Florida game.

Let’s Get It On

Time for some football. #4 LSU and #11 Notre Dame in the ’07 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Notre Dame hasn’t won a bowl game in almost a decade, which included a 27-9 lose to LSU in the ’97 Independence Bowl. I got a feeling this ain’t going to be pretty.

We Shocked the World!

"We shocked the world" was what Jim Edmonds, the stud center fielder had to say just moments after the Cardinals won the World Series yesterday. The Cardinals only won 83 games this year, the lowest total by any World Series champ. This was the 10th World Series victory (17th NL pennants) for the Cardinals, second only to the famed New York Yankees.

For Cardinal fans this was the sweetest of all victories.

In 2004 the Cardinals won 105 games, the most in the majors, only to get rolled 4-0 by Boston. Then last year they won 100 games, only to lose to Houston, which then get routed by Chicago 4-0.

As Bernie Miklasz said in his St. Louis Post Dispatch column today:

This [championship] was for the franchise immortals who always return home, a college of Cardinals, visiting this baseball Vatican in St. Louis. They are living monuments: Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Red Schoendienst and Bruce Sutter. Their presence reminds new generations of Cardinals that theirs is an extraordinary legacy, always to be handled with care.

This was for old friends who could not be there, but you just know that the spirits of Jack Buck and Darryl Kile were close to the Cardinals and their fans, watching over the drama of Game 5.

This was for baseball’s best fans, who had waited 23 seasons for a reaffirmation of the proud franchise’s glorious tradition. It doesn’t matter where they were gathered for Game 5. They could have been shivering in the frigid bowl of Busch Stadium, or watching by the fireplace at home, or bonding with friends in a local sports bar, or watching on satellite from a base camp in Iraq, or an outpost in Afghanistan.

Cardinals fans live everywhere, existing as one extended family, and
they became one nation under a groove again on Friday night, when the
power of this Red October pulled their heartbeats together in an
electric moment. At 10:22 on the evening of Oct. 27, 2006, rookie
Cardinals closer Adam Wainwright struck out the Tigers’ Brandon Inge on
a heinous breaking ball, sealing World Series title No. 10 with a 4-2
victory in Game 5.

So we did it! We won, and I can’t wait, just can’t wait for the parade tomorrow. St. Louis Cardinals: 2006 World Champs. Gosh that sounds great to say!
