When Acronyms Attack

Posted by on Sep 20, 2007 in Blog, Stuff | No Comments

Our society appears to be so fast-paced that just about every phrase is turned into an acronym. Well it would appear somethings this isn’t the best idea.

A few days ago in Seattle it became public that a new line opening up in December of this year would be called the South Lake Union Trolley. Or SLUT. The name was quickly changed to South Lake Union Streetcar.

But since America is a nation of folks that can always find a way to make money, Kapow! Coffee started selling shirts that read, “Ride the S.L.U.T.” Not only is it funny, but I might even
wear one. I wonder if anybody would wear a tee that says “Ride the SLUS?”

Realizing (Finally) A Dream

It is always a wonderful thing to witness an individual realizing their dreams. Even more so when that person is your father. Growing up my father worked 24/7. I can’t recall a single time he ever bought anything of substance for himself. Instead the money always went for things my mother, my brother, or I wanted. So it was with great joy I got an email from him today with the below pic attached.

I can recall hundreds, maybe thousands of times growing up when my father talked for hours about how much he’d love to own a ’57 Ford Thunderbird. It took him till he was retired for a few years, but he is now the very proud owner of his life long dream. I bet he is tooling around with the top down on a winding country road as I type this.

Sand between my feet, sun on my face, the sound of the surf only feet away. How wonderful a feeling. First extended break in a long time. Should be back on August 7th.

Not the Best Interview

Here is a link to an interview with the Chairman of CEO of Fox News, Roger Ailes. I find it interesting he says, "you know" more then 75 times throughout the interview.

Those Less Fortunate

A day or so ago I suggested you donate to NPR and PBS. I kind of got the order of posts, well out of order. Do this first, then if you wish and can afford give money to lister supported media.

Find a local charity and give a young child a warm winter coat, wool hat, and gloves. A book and a toy. I usually just go to T.J. Maxx and can pick up the whole package for $50, but I usually spend a few more dollars.

I just don’t know if there is anything worse for a young child to be cold, not to at least "have" the opportunity to own and have a chance to read a book. And IMHO it is a crime for any child under ten not to get to unwrap one gift during the holiday season.

Support PBS & NPR

Npr_pbs_logos_6This holiday season I’d like to make a suggestion. Open your checkbook and send $100 to PBSNPR station. and your local If these media outlets didn’t receive "contributions from viewers like you," I doubt they’d be able to air two hours on String Theory. The same goes for public radio. For the past year I have been hooked on KCRW, a station based out of Santa Monica, CA. I listen to it almost 24/7. And when I am not listenting to the live feed, I most likely am listening to a CD that I would have never found if KCRW wasn’t allow to play the music they like.  So send them some money. It feels real good.
